The annual Soul-A-Thon
each fall is the largest fund-raiser of the year for the Stax
Museum of American Soul Music and Stax Music Academy. This is a
two-day event with live radio broadcasting all day at the Stax Music
Academy, a children's festival, live concerts, on-air personalities,
and much more to help raise fund that help us operate and expand our
many programs, events, exhibits, and other aspects of our mission.
This year, there will be a grand opening reception on night one of
Soul-A-Thon for "Between Midnight and Day: The Last Unpublished
Blues Archive," 60 rare photographs by Dick Waterman of the
famous blues artists in the world, including B.B King, Etta James,
Janis Joplin, Lightning Hopkins, Son House, Ray Charles, Eric
Clapton, Pinetop Perkins, Muddy Waters, and dozens of other. The
event features live music by the Memphis Blues Society's
International Blues Competition winners, along with complimentary
wine, beer & hors d'oeuvres. $10 general admission, Free to Stax
Museum members.

COMING EVENTS
STAX
Although Stax closed in 1975, the label's legacy has and
continues to influence a myriad of music genres from rock, gospel and
funk to rap, jazz and neo-soul. Tribute to that sound has been paid
through countless performances, covers and samplings by The Rolling
Stones, Jay-Z, Aerosmith, Willie Nelson, David Bowie, Jimmy Hendrix,
Janis Joplin, Mary J. Blige, Aretha Franklin, Bruce Springsteen,
Blues Brothers, Salt-N-Pepa, En Vogue, ZZ Top and more. Many made and
planned pilgrimages in search of the essence of Stax's original, raw
and gritty soul. The Beatles scheduled then cancelled a recording
session, a young Elton John visited and even Elvis recorded at the
Stax studios.
Revitalizing Soulsville USA
Soulsville USA is the two-square-mile hamlet in South Memphis
where American music greats created, lived and recorded. The house
where Aretha Franklin was born still stands. Al Green recorded at Hi
Records here. Earth, Wind and Fire's founder, Maurice White lived and
sang with future Stax artists. Jazz pianist, Phineas Newborn lived
there. Blues legend, Memphis Minnie is buried here. Rev. Herbert
Brewster, Smithsonian honored gospel composer, lived and composed here.
Museum programming together with The Stax Music Academy is
nurturing the next generation of urban youth, primarily from the
Soulsville area, by providing music instruction and exposure to the
people and business of music. The jewel of a successful neighborhood
revitalization project, The Stax Museum and The Stax Music Academy
seek to lift children and the community through cultural renewal.
Soulsville, a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization, oversees the
development and operation of the Stax Museum and Stax Music Academy.
